SAMTHING SOWETO DEDICATES A HEARTFELT SERENADE TITLED “AMAGENTS” TO HIS DAUGHTER

Award-winning musician Samthing Soweto is back with a banger! Following the release of his awe-inspiring single, “Amagents”, the singer might just bag another accolade, this time for being the best dad in the world. “Amagents” is a heartfelt open letter in the form of a sweet-sounding serenade dedicated to his daughter. Taking to social media ahead of the release, Samthing Soweto described the song as a “simple yet complex message from a father to his daughter”.

The song was released a few days after Father’s Day, showcasing Samthing’s dedication to being a “girl dad.” Playing the role of a protective father, Samthing Soweto repeatedly warns his daughter about boys and their mischief throughout the song. The “Akanamali” hitmaker sings “Ayafan’ Amagents” in the song’s chorus, which is Zulu for the popular phrase “all men are the same.”

Melting the listener’s heart, Samthing Soweto addresses his daughter endearingly using words such as “baby” and “darling” throughout the serenade. Expressing love and concern, the singer croons, “uzothi umunt’ uyamazi, avele akumangaze” (you’ll think you know someone, only to have them surprise you) – further cautioning his daughter about romantic relationships with men.

Resembling most of his classics, “Amagents” comprises distinctive sonic elements. The song’s laidback, Afro-fusion instruments perfectly complement the subtleness in Samthing Soweto’s tone. The log drums in the song are nostalgic of the singer’s Isiphithiphithi era, which saw him collaborating with the likes of Kabza De Small to produce amapiano hits such as “Lotto”.

Apart from the “boys will be boys” theme, “Amagents” also elaborates on the social ills plaguing South African society, such as gender-based violence. The singer paints a grim picture of the challenges facing the average Black South African while simultaneously reassuring them that all will be well. The song’s slow tempo, coupled with Samthing Soweto’s euphonious falsetto, propels the song’s ambience of love, hope, and fortitude.

“Amagents” has been welcomed with warm and open arms by social media music enthusiasts, reaching over a million streams since its release. The chart-topping serenade is Samthing Soweto’s first music release since his fiery EP, Danko!, back on December 11, 2020. The singer was on a creative break, citing a battle with depression. “Amagents” is said to be a taste of what we can expect from his forthcoming album set to drop later this year.
