Tyla’s “Breathe Me” Music Video A Date Night Vignette In Japan

After having finished unfurling her Jozi girl aesthetic and shedding the Carribean bug, Grammy-winning South African singer-songwriter Tyla has returned with brand spanking new visuals for her sensual rendition “Breathe Me” from her self-titled debut project. The double BET Award-winning songstress envelops her endearing date night with her muse in a romantic highlight reel. Directed by American-Australian director Nabil, the end-to-beginning transition between “Truth or Dare” and “Breathe Me” help the latter music video to piggyback off the ending of the former, giving the visuals a feel of continuity.

Set in Osaka, Japan, the music video recounts a tale of two young lovers – Tyla and her onscreen muse – who regale each other with good company and fun activities under the kaleidoscope of fluorescent karaoke room lights and bustling streets burning with neon signage.

Timestamped 10:47PM, the popiano superstar’s visuals capture her clinging to her muse’s back, giggling as they stagger past a quiet passage bathed with the pastel shower of aqua-blue lighting fringed with a golden glare leaked from the corners of the corridor. The lovebirds slip into an intimate karaoke room bespangled with the kinetic disco light designs projected on the walls. There, the two trade turns singing for one another, melting into one another’s laps with each soulful performance.

Once the two finish their karaoke date, the pair hit the streets for a walk, pecking each other’s hands and lips as they make various stops. From enjoying chicken wings from a street vendor to rejoicing in their love by taking shots in the club and making out under the CCTV camera of a store, Tyla and her lover sow their wild oats on “Breathe Me”, taking each other in and making the most out of their date night in the Japanese city.

The date comes around full circle towards the cusp of the music video, with her muse carrying her in her arms as they make their make their way to their hotel room, the time being 2:24AM in the frame.

“Breathe Me” is an urban date imbued with fairytale-inspired tropes of a handsome prince charming enamored with a pretty princess that he wants to do nothing with than to show her a good time and bless her with all the loving she needs to keep her smiling. Coupled with fireflies of city lights, the music video aspires for surrealism but settles for an endearing love story.
