As the sun begins its descent to bid the year farewell, Mzansi artists have already begun launching their bids for songs that will usher in the new year. Woodblock DJs have already stamped their authority in the amapiano scene with their viral hit “Skuta Baba”, spawning dance challenges on TikTok before visuals dropped and took off past the one-million mark on YouTube. Woodblock have now returned with a remix of their breakthrough hit, featuring heavyweights such as Kwesta and Cassper Nyovest as well as the new wave in the shape of Tony Dayimane, Kane Keid and Buzzi Lee.
Flying the Motswako flag on the remake, Cassper Nyovest heralds his verse with proudly North West interpolations of Morafe’s late 2000s classic “The Whole Thang”. With luxury rap-infused bars ranging from braggadocious swipes about his wife (“Mabhebeza, yellow, baba”) to high-end lifestyle habits, the cosmopolitan musician carpets the song with his energetic feature for Kane Keid to step up the pace of the song with boasts fit for the lifestyle of a rolling stone always away from home on tour.

Tony Dayimane and Buzzi Lee hold the fort in the middle of the song with their dynamic verses before the latter passes the baton to the self-professed king of African rap, Kwesta, who fletches his tributary verse with a signature baritone-deepened performance. Keeping true to his identity as one of the countries sharpest pens in the disciplines of pun construction and entendre stacking, the “Ngud'” hitmaker dishes out exhaustive shoutouts to kwaito legends with his lengthy verse, including the likes of Arthur Mafokate, Zola, Spikiri and Trompies with slick interpolations from their iconic hit “Bengim’ngaka”.
The core essence behind the viral success of the original “Skuta Baba” was the stripped-down songwriting coupled with the thumping production. Sacrificing simplicity for intricate lyricism and quippy wordplay, the remix is a laden and detailed work of sophistication best taken in without necessarily getting on one’s feet and throwing one’s soles skyward and slamming them on the floor to the rhythm of the beat.
