Mmuso Worship: The Gospel Collective Redefining Worship Through Spirit-Led Music

Mmuso Worship is more than just a musical band — it’s a heartfelt ministry devoted to leading people into deep, spirit-filled encounters with God through worship. Now five albums in, with their latest offering titled Testify, the gospel ensemble’s influence within the Christian community is undeniable.

Made up of 12 members and led by Pastor Koketso Molaolwe, the band features familiar voices such as Idols Season 14 winner Yanga Khoza (née Sobetwa), prolific singer-songwriter Oncemore Six, and Bongi Damans — a name that has become deeply rooted in the hearts of South Africans for over two decades.

What sets this group apart from the many that Bongi has previously been part of — and what she describes as a breath of fresh air — is the heart behind the music: every member came to seek God first, long before considering a music career.

A Matthew 6:33 type of calling, where purpose was birthed from pure pursuit.

“Each and every one of us came to Mmuso Church purely seeking God, only for Him to later reveal His divine plan — that He wanted us to serve Him through music,” she shares, noting that many of them came from different churches.

The church has produced songs such as “Ngeke Ng’suke Kuwe”, “Ebenezar” and “Jeso O Ntekane”.

The music they produce mirrors that sincerity — rich, spirit-lifting harmonies layered over soulful melodies with a rhythmic blend of contemporary gospel, African flair, and moments of spontaneous worship. It’s heartfelt, powerful, and deeply rooted in the Word.

When it comes to creating their albums, the group’s writing process can best be described as Spirit-led and organic. While spontaneity plays a big role, Bongi highlights that it’s their obedience to God’s voice that truly guides the music — always.

“There are many instances that I can look back at when songs would be written on the spot, and when we sing them, they sound like songs we’ve always known.

“This past Easter, the Thursday before, our music director Pule Mpeke commented that we needed a song that spoke about the cross, Calvary, and Christ. Oncemore immediately wore his songwriting hat and huddled into a corner while he encouraged us to chat away. Minutes later, he came back with a song that sounded so impactful and in season,” she said.

Throughout the year, the team experiences many of these spontaneous, Spirit-led moments of music writing—often during prayer, worship sessions, or even in everyday life — until the time comes for them to gather and record what God has been birthing in their hearts.

The 22-track album draws from the many testimonies shared by church members, ministry partners, and even from the broader Mmuso Church community. From a wealth of songs, the team selects those that best reflect the themes and seasons God is speaking into.

It’s an honest reflection of the group’s journey—rooted in faith, anchored in truth, and overflowing with gratitude for God’s unwavering goodness.

“Mmuso Worship’s growth can first be measured in the faith of its members. Before we even consider the music, it’s our individual spiritual growth—our personal walks with Christ—that add a beautiful depth to how we serve the listener,” she said.

Their foundation is simple but powerful: one must first be a child of God before becoming a vocalist for the group’s albums or services. This shared spiritual purpose allows the band to operate with one voice, cultivating worship that flows from a place of alignment and authenticity.
