Gunna’s “The Last Wun”: A Victory Lap in Trap and Beyond

On The Last Wun, Gunna does not just deliver an album, but a statement piece, one that bids farewell to his chapter with YSL/300. Across 25 tracks and nearly 80 minutes, Gunna solidifies his position not only as a trap heavyweight but as an artist capable of stretching his sound without bending his identity.

Surviving the storm hasn’t been easy for the trap tycoon, but he prevailed, and that’s evident from the opening track “Many Nights”, where he pens the message. “Life feel like a war, but Lord protecting my soul / Praying on my knees so many nights.” Here, Gunna points out that he still battles with the demons he escaped, but God has been on his side. This isn’t just vulnerability, it’s a battle hymn.

Gunna’s spirit of unshaken determination threads through this album, in tracks like “Won’t Stop”, where dark piano and pounding drums frame his resolve. “Adversity dismissed, doubling down on growth, riches, and relentless personal success.” On this track, Wunna exudes defiance. Perhaps, aimed at naysayers, that no matter what, he does not intend to stop chasing what belongs to him.

The single, “Him All Along,” finds the Georgia mogul doubling down on his most distilled philosophy: that he has always been him. The line, “stay strong, he done been him all along,” defines an era of his career, asserting authenticity in a landscape often obsessed with reinvention.

On The Last Wun, Gunna does not land by himself. He recruits collaborators who don’t just fill spaces, but bring impact to the spaces provided. Notably, giants from the globe. Afrobeats stars like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Asake step into Gunna’s tempo and tone and that sees the album become an experiment in cultural crossover done right. A testament that Gunna isn’t remaining static, but is evolving for the better. With this experiment, he doesn’t dilute his DNA; instead, he lets these collaborators bring their worlds into his.

Each collaboration is deliberate and strategic without being too calculated. “At My Purest” sees Offset appear at a guess and serves as a reminder of Wunna’s Atlanta roots and street-coded chemistry. They go back and forth on the hard beat, securing an anthem that’s driving the streets crazy.

The production is run by long-time partner, Turbo, with assistance from Kenny Stuntin, Evrgrn, and Gunna himself. The beats are sleek and grounded, yet they ensure the melodic trap foundation stays intact while allowing room for global infusions.

The Last Wun is Gunna at his most assured. It’s the sound of an artist who’s fought through turbulence, doubled down on who he is, and refused to shrink in the face of new territory. This isn’t just his “last one” under the YSL label, but a victory lap, a declaration that wherever Gunna goes next, the world is coming with him.
