Two decades into a career defined by rhythm, resilience, and reinvention, Zakes Bantwini continues to evolve with the same quiet conviction that first drew listeners to his sound. His story is not only one of musical mastery, but of a man who refuses to stay still—a visionary intent on pushing South African creativity beyond borders and boundaries.
Fresh from completing an executive programme at Harvard Business School, Zakes speaks of transformation, not triumph. “Completing the programme at Harvard was truly transformative for me,” he reflects. “It opened my eyes to new ways of thinking about leadership and creativity. I returned with a renewed passion for Mayonie Productions, eager to blend our artistic vision with strategic insights.” That global exposure has shifted how he envisions the next chapter for his company. “This experience has inspired the evolution of Mayonie, encouraging us to expand into new divisions, including sports, while remaining committed to elevating our brand and supporting artists in the creative industry.”

Mayonie Productions, the label he founded as a student, has grown into an emblem of perseverance and purpose. The years have brought both triumphs and trials. “The most rewarding part of growing Mayonie Productions has been witnessing the impact we have on artists and the community,” he shares. “Helping launch and promote talent fills me with pride. On the other hand, the challenges have been significant, particularly in navigating the complexities of the music industry. Balancing my passion for music with the practicalities of running a business has required constant adaptation and resilience.”
That same resilience defines his artistry. In 2024, Zakes marked twenty years in music with a grand anniversary concert at Durban’s ICC—an evening of reflection and gratitude. “The anniversary concert was particularly special. It was a heartfelt celebration, bringing together fans, friends, and fellow artists who have been part of my journey,” he says. “I also cherish the release of my first album and the collaborations that have shaped my sound. Each milestone reminds me of the incredible community around me, and I’m grateful for every moment.”

From the underground pulse of Afro-house to the global stages of Afro-tech, his sound has been central to South Africa’s musical evolution. “It’s been amazing to see Afro-house and Afro-tech gain the recognition they deserve,” he says with quiet pride. “Watching how our music has transcended borders and influenced global sounds has been thrilling. For the first time, we’re showcasing Mayonie in a way we’ve never done before, celebrating its legacy and the evolution of these genres.” Still, his vision remains forward-looking. “I see the sound continuing to evolve, embracing new influences while staying true to its roots, with emerging artists pushing boundaries in exciting ways.”
A defining moment in his journey came with Bayethe, the Grammy-winning collaboration that cemented his international acclaim. Yet for Zakes, the accolade carries a deeper meaning. “Winning a Grammy was a surreal moment that reinforced my belief in the potential of South African artists,” he says. “It motivates me to give back to the community by mentoring and nurturing local talent. I want to help them realise their dreams and show them that with dedication, they too can reach a global audience. It’s about lifting each other up and creating pathways for success.”
Behind the success, however, lies a steady awareness of balance. “Absolutely, I would choose this path again,” he says when asked if he’d do it all over. “Music has always been my passion, allowing me to connect with people on a deeper level. As I’ve navigated this journey, I’ve learned the importance of setting boundaries—especially in balancing my career with personal life, prioritising my mental well-being, and ensuring I have a strong support system. These boundaries have become essential to staying grounded and focused amid the industry’s demands.”

Now, as the Mayonie Festival returns, Zakes’ mission comes full circle. “This year’s Mayonie Festival promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Afro House and Afro Tech,” he says. “We’re excited to showcase incredible talent, including artists signed under the Mayonie label, alongside both nostalgic acts and emerging voices. Attendees can expect an immersive experience that connects them with our rich culture and the evolution of these genres. It’s a chance to come together, celebrate our roots, and look forward to the future of our music.”
Through every reinvention, one truth remains: Zakes Bantwini’s legacy is not just about sound—it’s about shaping spaces where creativity thrives and the next generation finds its rhythm. His journey is proof that growth, like music, is most powerful when it refuses to stand still.
