Vibrating on a higher frequency and restoring the health of the souls of every listener is the heart that forms the centre of DJ and record producer Sharm Pillay’s artistry. From the world of the corporate life to ascending the ladder of the Techno space with her debut “Soul to Soul”, Pillay’s breakthrough is not overnight but it did come over nights.
The DJ reveals the cogs and wheels that went into the creation of her song “Soul to Soul”, her Lady of the House SA Competition-winning track.
“I followed a very unconventional process with the making of ‘Soul to Soul’ in that the creation of the song was between me and my spirit guides, crazy as that may sound. I literally got in front of my computer and I didn’t even know what to do technically. Writing this song came from a true and negative experience that I had—with no blame to anyone—that just so happened to be part of my journey. The lyrics themselves turned into a healing platform relative to the experience I created around, and it was an amazing process because I didn’t know that I had all this stuff within me just waiting to come out,” she says.

With her connection to the energetic plane of existence, Pillay shares some plans for the future, including pushing her own limits artistically.
“There’s a long cycle that’s ending that I’ve walked in an astrological sense. What the future is looking like to me is that—having gone through some internal processes—the time has come for me to take things to the next level, which is an exciting and beautifully scary thing. I’ve released some tracks already and I have more to go. I’ll also be launching my book as well as my record label in December called Code 1313. And I chose the number 13 because it represents the divine feminine and because I carry the code on a personal level in my DNA,” she says.
Conscious of the debilitating state of the world and the wounds of human brokenness, Pillay talks about her mission to address this problem with her music, awakening love within the hearts of humanity.
“My legacy in music is to illuminate love consciousness on the planet and just create a culture where we move towards being positive role models for the generations to come. I’d like to see us move away from the superficial, from the current states of not being self-aware. I’d love to see us asking questions about how we can be better people by looking within. I want to be able to inspire those behind me with my story—my music, after all, is the vibration I’ll be leaving behind. We can’t take anything with us, but we certainly can leave our signature when we leave this place,” she says.

Sharm lists the things that have helped her grow from strength to strength in her path.
“Music keeps me connected to my soul, so what I normally do is to commit myself to staying focused and consistent musically. I might not be the most disciplined person in the room, but I do possess tenacity and staying power and those are the things that have helped me get as far as I have—resilience, too. It takes all those things to see the path ahead of me and formulate a plan moving forward, whether it’s how I present myself socially or what kind of message I aim on putting out. Because this game will challenge you hard on every level, so you have to keep looking forward and not give up,” she says.
Hoping to collaborate with Euphonik and Black Coffee, and getting into Afro-House, she reveals some experiments she wished to get into some day.
“I’ve already started toying with the idea of fusing Afro-House with some Indian elements instrumentally, which is something I call Afro-Indi. I’d like to explore some of that more, along with Soul and Funk,” she says.
