The rise and the return. That is the statement that best encapsulates the visuals of the ‘Princess Diana (Remix)’ by Ice Spice. The twenty-three-year-old Bronx artist has brought the imminent collaboration with veteran rapper Nicki Minaj to life, after ones and twos on the socials. The music video – the second from her EP Like…?, which succeeds In Ha Mood, is a raunchy adult Barbie fantasy which sees two generations of sexually liberated women converge to exhibit their own interpretation of what it is to be a hot asset in the game.
The Edgar Esteves directed short film starts with the ‘Munch‘ rapper perched on a pink antique chair in harmony with her bubblegum-coloured bed-chamber, her thick-soled high heels, a heart-shaped tube top, as well as a furry negligee. Dangling from her neck is her custom-made diamond-encrusted necklace with a pendant hewn in her likeness. The scene that follows depicts Ice Spice as a human disco ball, clad in metallic-silver garments, projecting spangles all over the tight four-cornered space with her fiery hair being the only source of contrast.
After Ice Spice models around the chamber in a pink-and-black bra, the scene cuts to the pair applying lipstick while staring at each other.
Matching Ice Spice’s attire – as seen in the opening of ‘Princess Diana (Remix)’ – rap’s very own Barbie sports a diamond chain with the actual word on it. In many senses, Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice feed off each other, mirroring one another in a form of paying homage to one another.
And throughout the music video, the two ladies shake their assets, stroke each other’s body parts, and take videos all the while, as though they were in their own private quarters.
The visuals for the ‘Princess Diana (Remix)’ are what happens when two women, who recognise pieces of themselves in each other, agree to come together. The music video is not quite like ‘WAP‘ in its raunchiness – if anything it’s tame. However, the camaraderie between the pair is visible in the awkward goofiness and the comfort they provide for each other by simply being themselves.
