Zandie Khumalo Returns With a Fearless, Genre-Blending ‘Ebantwini’

After a quiet stretch away from regular releases, Zandie Khumalo is ready to remind listeners exactly why her voice still carries weight in South African music. Her new EP, Ebantwini, arrives as a confident and genre-fluid body of work — one she not only co-produced, a first for her, but one that also reflects both her lived experiences and her steady artistic evolution. Across the six-track project, Khumalo leans fully into creative freedom, blending Afro-soul, gospel textures and up-tempo dance moments with ease.

At its heart, Ebantwini feels intentional. Khumalo has long been vocal about refusing to be boxed into one lane, and this project reinforces that stance with quiet confidence. As a body of work from an artist not bound to any genre, each song carries its own emotional temperature, yet the EP still feels cohesive — held together by her unmistakable vocal warmth and spiritual undertone.

The inspiration behind Ebantwini is deeply personal. Khumalo explains that the project draws from both the love she has experienced and the hardships she has had to navigate as both a woman and an artist.

She shares that the EP is inspired by “life and the journey that I have travelled as a human being and as an artist; the love I have experienced and the hardships of life”. That duality gives the project its emotional texture, allowing it to move between reflective moments and more uplifting sonic pockets without losing its centre.

Standout track “Emhlabeni” emerges as one of the project’s most affecting moments. Here, Khumalo leans into themes of grace, faith and endurance, delivering a performance that feels vulnerable but grounded. A personal song about the grace God has shown to her family, it is the kind of record that invites listeners to sit quietly with the lyrics rather than rush through them.

There is also a thoughtful nod to tradition on “Hlakanipha”, her reimagining of the hymn “Wenhliziyo”. Instead of simply covering the classic, Khumalo reshapes it with her own sonic identity, giving the familiar melody a fresh emotional layer while still respecting its spiritual roots. It is a delicate balance, but one she handles with care.

Another notable favourite of hers is the opening track, “Prayer”, which features her mother, Ntombi Khumalo who notably has a great singing voice too.

“My music is timeless, and I feel no pressure to release music back to back,”

Another noteworthy shifts in Khumalo’s career is her role behind the scenes. The singer formally steps into co-production on this project, working closely with her husband, Mhlo Gumede.

For Khumalo, this role was not a rushed decision but a step she approached with patience and preparation. A role she has spent the past few years sharpening her musical ear for, and that growth is audible in the EP’s clean, uncluttered arrangements. The production allows her voice to lead while still giving each track enough musical depth to feel full.

The last time Khumalo released a full body of work was in 2021, but the gap appears to have worked in her favour. Rather than returning with something hurried, she arrives with music that feels settled and self-assured.

That mindset gives Ebantwini its calm authority in a fast-moving digital space where artists often feel pressure to constantly drop new material.

With Ebantwini, Zandie Khumalo is not chasing reinvention — she is refining. The project positions her in a pace of quiet confidence, an artist comfortable enough to move between Afro-soul, gospel and dance influences while keeping her emotional core intact. For listeners, the EP offers a journey that feels both personal and accessible. And if this release is anything to go by, Khumalo is stepping into a season where the music — pure, heartfelt and unforced — will continue to speak loudest.
