BABYDAIZ TAKES OFF WITH THE RESTLESS ENERGY OF “SKELEWU SKELEWU (KIRIKOU)”

BabyDaiz has taken off. On “Skelewu Skelewu (Kirikou),” the rising artist sounds less interested in introducing himself than in announcing that he has already arrived. The song moves with the restless confidence of someone who understands that momentum is its own form of currency, opening with the playful declaration, “Welcome to my lecture,” before immediately descending into a dense stream of multilingual phrases, slang and rhythmic fragments. It is deliberately difficult to pin down, and that is part of its appeal. BabyDaiz is not building the song around a conventional lyrical narrative, he is building an atmosphere where sound, cadence and personality do most of the talking.

At the centre of the record is Kirikou, the famously small but deceptively formidable character, which BabyDaiz turns into a metaphor for his own trajectory. “On me voit petit, mais j’ai jouteau”, roughly, “they see me as small, but I have something”, becomes the song’s thesis. There is an understanding here that stature and impact are not the same thing. The references to money, power and hustle reinforce that idea, while the repeated “Skeleus” and “Kirikou” chants give the track an almost ritualistic quality. BabyDaiz keeps returning to the same phrases until they stop functioning purely as words and become hooks, percussive elements and signifiers of attitude.

What makes “Skelewu Skelewu (Kirikou)” particularly interesting is how little it cares about staying in one linguistic or sonic lane. French, English, Lingala and fragmented expressions collide throughout the song, creating something that feels distinctly contemporary and culturally fluid. The production, as reflected through the lyrics’ constant rhythmic switches, appears designed for movement rather than contemplation. Even when BabyDaiz is talking about work, competition or ambition, the song refuses to become motivational in the conventional sense. It remains playful, chaotic and kinetic. That balance gives the record its character, there is ambition underneath it, but there is also an obvious desire to have fun with the performance.

“Skelewu Skelewu (Kirikou)” ultimately feels like a statement from an artist discovering how much space he can occupy. BabyDaiz takes the idea of being underestimated and turns it into fuel, repeatedly reminding listeners that being perceived as small does not mean thinking small. The song may not reveal every dimension of the artist, but it does reveal something arguably more important at this stage, a willingness to sound unmistakably like himself. With its infectious repetition, multilingual energy and mischievous confidence, BabyDaiz’s latest release feels like another step in an artist taking off, not by explaining exactly where he is going, but by making enough noise for everyone to notice that he is moving.
