Not even two weeks after the drop of ‘Love to Smoke’, North Dakota-born hip hop star Wiz Khalifa has spawned another music video. Shot by Braden Walker and produced by Sledgren and Chris Dreamer, the visuals for ‘Mercury Retrograde’ serve as a teaser, with all roads hinting at the imminent advent of Wizzlemania.
The opulent ‘Mercury Retrograde’ music video features the thirty-five-year-old rapper boarding a private jet while clad in luxury clothing, most notably a Celine cap. Along with his entourage, he smokes blunts and drinks while numbing the effects of kush with a meal from the multi-national food franchise Benihana. The Grammy-nominated musician begins rapping about how the astrological phenomenon the song is named after has him rethinking his life’s trajectory as the airplane traverses the rolling hills below it.
The intimate plane scene is replaced by those of towering water springs and bright city lights after the “Welcome to Las Vegas” diamond-shaped sign greets Wiz’s shuttle. Before honouring his fans with his presence en route to a show, he checks into a studio where he meets fellow American rapper Benny the Butcher, among others.
The fast-moving sequences cover pictures of Wiz’s specially-tailored smoking strain “Khalifa Kush”, Wiz spitting in the booth, and delicacies lined on a platter. And there are blunts galore. Blunt smoke everywhere: a trademark feature of a stock Khalifa music video.
The third segment of the visuals sees the rapper performing one of his old songs from 2010, ‘The Kid Frankie’, for a buzzing crowd under blinding lights and the rain of confetti. He throws a giant balloon-like blunt at the hyped crowd and continues regaling his fans under the strobe lights while the stage is ablaze with pyrotechnics. And true to the signature lifestyle that has so come to define Wiz, slides of booze, kush (again), and nightlife capped the show.
‘Mercury Retrograde’, much like its preceding music video ‘Love to Smoke’, ends off with the words “WIZZLEMANIA ON THE WAY” written in stark all-white letters over a black background.
