Victony, Tempoe, Don Toliver & Rema Reimagine Soweto in Four Different Decades for “Soweto (Remix)”

It has been close to six months since Nigerian singer Victony released the exotic visuals for ‘Soweto’ alongside record producer Tempoe. Capitalising on the song’s success, with the music video being popular eye candy, the Naija songwriter enlisted the additional assistance of American rapper Don Toliver and compatriot Rema for ‘Soweto (Remix)’. The cocktail-coloured music video for ‘Soweto (Remix)’ is helmed by director Jyde Ajala.

Set in the 70s era in Soweto, the music video kicks off with a snapshot of the original short film’s beginning showing Victony in a sea-blue outfit, a walking cane, and a white paperboy cap. The scene-in-a-scene is framed by a box-shaped television crowned with a wooden metronome. The music video features antique fashion and furniture fitting for the era-specific creative direction.

However, the “Soweto (Remix) music video reaches for the ethereal with its pastel colours, infusing a whimsical feel to the decade represented. In the room, Victony sings in the company of models either arrayed in body-conforming clothing or loose-fitting dresses in harmony with the colourful surroundings and geometrical paintings on the walls.

The music video phases to 2098, still in Soweto, introducing Toliver’s portion in the song. Clad in a light-green blazer and lavender pants, Toliver is a chameleon of the makeshift lab populated with marijuana greenery. He sings while attended by a pair of women in robot-silver dresses and snow-white hair, the twins either pruning the trees or testing the purity of unknown liquids in glass beakers.

The final third of the music video portrays singer Rema in Soweto in 1993. Dressed in a furry hat, multi-coloured bling, and Scottish-patterned shirts, the singer dominates a record store while vixens shake their goods in the background. Tempoe takes over the Soweto 2023 period with his purple attire, playing the piano and the flute to round up the visuals.
