The only thing in life more important than music is live music. In the era of crystal-clear sound engineering and digital soundscapes, I often wonder what life would be if things were organic. Where the drum is not a pre-programmed creation from a digital audio interface, and when our ears don’t have to underwhelmingly settle for the wonders of technological advancement that has stifled the raw, unprocessed instrumentation of music.
Award-winning producer, artist, and music director, Zādok has taken it upon himself to be the resident hero of my digitally-synthesized playlist. Working with enthralling talents, namely: AKA, Airboy, Bali, and Mthunzi, he has effectively tipped the scales in favour of a live and organic feel infused with the infectious undertones of Amapiano and Afrobeats; one can only imagine how his JR’s Feel Good Live Sessions will look. I am already excited by how it makes me feel.
Zādok’s latest offering, Perspective: Red, is bustling with vibrant sonic expressions and intricate storytelling. Through a series of odes, the anthemic narrative dedicated to a disgruntled lover, drained by Zādok’s lifestyle, serves as a charming consolation. With “No Lie”, “Come Back”, and “Ngikwenzeni”, the Vth Season serenader assures his intended that the only thing that keeps him away from home is work, rather than the distracting glitz and glam of the industry.
Feeling the brunt of this travel-intensive industry, Zādok struggles with the reality that his line of work will always strain his relationships with friends, family, or romantic partners. Rather than wallow in it, he changes perspectives and creates magic for his spirit to live in their homes while he is away, grinding for them and to make life better.
Through an ensemble of dreamy percussive basslines, Spanish and electric guitars, and backing vocals/harmonies that emotively crescendo into each other, there’s minimal possibility of me working through the emotional triggers from my past life and my present challenges without having a good dance. I am inspired to be in love with my flaws and to be composed. And also to be on the other side of destiny, creating my own luck versus waiting for fortune and favour to find me.
