Grammy-winning American rapper Doechii has not only resurrected her famed Swamp Sessions but has also stoked anticipation for her upcoming debut album with “BOMBS”. Much like every other recording released under the Swamp banner, her latest drop is a bite-sized offering of taut lyricism, sharp-shooting performance, and a music video that looks like something extracted from hip-hop art direction from the early 2000s.

The exotic nature of the visuals is proclaimed by the rapper introducing herself with a two-piece steel bikini, matching eyeshadow and metallic high heels. The self-directed music video places Doechii out in the wild, depicting her pantomiming the production with robotic movements and striking outlandish poses in rocky terrains and bushy overgrowth. The Tampa-born lyricist has long established herself as something of an outlier with her eccentric approach to making music and the accompanying presentation, and the visuals of “BOMBS” see her stay true to this identity she has formed.
The visual take of the song conjures up the ghost of Missy Elliot back in her “Get Yo Freak On” days while also looking back to Nicki Minaj’s Roman alter ego for the quirky mannerisms that dominate the way Doechii carries herself throughout the brief music video. The strobe light effect behind the flickering of the guns that go off in the course of the visuals pairs well with the fast-paced sound and the vignette format behind the ocular presentation.

Aggression is the name of the game for the “Denial is Not a River” hitmaker, and with her music video, she pulls out all the stops, marrying the vulgar lyrics of the song to a crude environment and crass art style which move in harmony. A rare instance in today’s world of music videos focused either on depicting luxury living or pandering to primordial desires such as sexual attraction or the call to violence.
The Swamp Princess’s latest outing is a promise that not only has the rapper stayed true to herself but that she is intentional about digging deeper without shying away from the true shape of her voice, manifest in her songs and her aesthetic.
